Natty is the BEST! So kind and knowledgeable! Was a wonderful experience kayaking with him. He shared so many insights into the geography and science behind the incredible nature he guided us through... and that actually made the rest of our time in Yellowstone so much more enjoyable as well!
One of the best guided tours we have been on! We (family of 3 adults + a 7y/o kid) booked this tour almost at the last week of our planned trip not knowing much about the wintry weather in mid Sep. The tour was operated by Prismatic Tours. We had a direct number available to call, so we got all the details of what to bring and an expected forecast etc. Directions to the location were texted to us in advance (no cell service inside the park, so download your maps in advance!). It had snowed the day prior and since we started the tour at around 9, it was freezing cold. But our tour guide Dillon was just fantastic. We started with coffee, and a quick lesson on "paddling for beginners". The kayaks and equipment were in good condition (seats could have been a but more comfy though). They had sprayskirts that protected us from water dripping onto us from the paddles, and it kept us warm too. Dillon was very knowledgeable, entertained us with great geological facts about the Yellowstone features. This was the first day at the park, and we learned so much in 4-5 hours about the parks, that by the end, we knew exactly where to go and what to see the next 3 days we spent traveling. The trip: started at the Grant Village marina, and covered about 6 miles (to and fro) along the shore and beach of the West Thumb. Stayed about 100 feet close to the shore, so we could see bald eagles, herd of elks (with calves and a large buck) that came to the waters. To our east was the Absaroka range and the Flat Top mountains and the Red Mountains which had snow. To the west shore we had fumeroles that emited sulfur bubbles as we went past the water. It was like a natgeo expedition. We inspected rocks and the break in the beach for lunch was fun too. Bring water and/or snacks if you have picky eaters (like kids) by the way. Thankfully my nephew liked the salami from the charcuterie plates Dillon spread out! We hope to be back in summer. All the best to Dillon for his winter gig!
This tour was a really awesome experience! Being out on the water gave our visit to Yellowstone a whole new dimension. Viewing the geysers from the water instead of the boardwalk was great! Paddling your kayaks right over fumerols that were easily visible through the crystal clear water was a unique experience. Our guides, Maddie and Dillon, were superb in every way. They were extremely knowledgeable about the Lake, the geysers and the wildlife and were just really fun people to be around. We observed an Elk in the edge of the lake taking a dip and later Dillon spotted Eagles in a distant tree that we were able to kayak over to and observe up close and get some great videos. A fantastic Charcuterie was provided for lunch on the beach and great conversation with Maddie and Dillon. I would highly recommend this tour as a more unique experience at Yellowstone. It was very peaceful out on the lake in the morning and as the winds picked up midday it gave you a little workout on the way back to shore. All of the equipment was in excellent shape (no stinky life jackets, all were in great shape) and the brightly colored kayaks photographed nicely. This was a fantastic experience that was made so memorable by Maddie and Dillon, their love of the area, kayaking, and people was truly heartfelt and greatly appreciated!
We ran into Natty by Lewis Lake one afternoon, and decided to do a private tour with him. It turned out to be one of the best experiences we had during our Yellowstone trip. He is so fun and knowledgeable. We have a three year old boy kayaking with us, and Natty played water with him, and made him laugh the whole time. We decided to do another sunrise tour along west thumb geyser basin, and it was so much fun again! My three year old had no issue and enjoyed the Kayak tour for 4 hours (with breaks and snacks). He still remember Uncle Natty from Yellowstone river! Thank you for the fantastic time and experience.
We were left high and dry when another tour company failed to show on 8/23/21. I inquired at Yellowstone Lake, and Natty (the onsite guide) from Prismatic Tours accommodated 4 of us on the spot! He was awesome, and the experience was a 10+ all the way around!!!
Kayaking on Lake Yellowstone was spectacular! Our original guides flaked on us at the last minute and so we found ourselves in need of a kayak. Natty of Prismatic Tours was the first company to the launch point. We approached him and his cheerfully professional demeanor assured us that this was a good option. We asked to join his tour and he graciously accommodated us. I imagine it would be better for all if you made advanced reservations but it worked for us how it did. The paddle itself was lovely. It was mellow, the wind was low. The geysers and fumeroles are lovely from the water. You can feel the water temp changing. Lunch was delicious- on that day it was salamis, cured smoked salmon, triscuits for days, lovely cheeses and fresh plums. We all sacked out for a brief nap after lunch on the sunny lake shore and then paddled back. Anecdotally, when we first arrived to the boat launch 30 min early, it was raining and briefly hailed. I was sure this was going to be wet and perhaps a little arduous. Turned out the weather cleared and it was a spectacular day!
We did the morning tour on Lake Yellowstone . Natty was an amazing guide. We had a great time. My husband and I never kayaked before. We felt safe, learned a lot and felt very comfortable the entire time . It was a much colder morning than we had anticipated when we booked and Natty brought all the supples needed to keep us warm and dry. We learned so much about about hydro thermal activity in Yellowstone, and about the the wildlife in and around the lake, and the park itself. What a great way to start our trip. If possible, I would even give an extra star because we saw Elk on the shoreline and a previously inactive geyser spewing !
Jimmy was my tour guide and I had an excellent time! I was the only one who booked for the sunrise tour that day and ended up getting a private tour of the lake. I'm not a super experienced kayaker but Jimmy explained everything and made sure I felt comfortable. He was extremely knowledgable with lots of fun facts about the history of the park and the natural features we saw. There was coffee provided which I was EXTREMELY thankful for, as I'm not entirely a morning person. We got on the water about an hour earlier then the large groups with the other companies, so we basically had the West Thumb to ourselves. Jimmy also recommended some day hikes for me to do after the tour and other places he enjoyed in the park. It's quite clear the company cares about more than just getting you in a kayak and getting paid. If I'm back in Yellowstone I'll definitely book again!
I went on a private morning kayak tour of the West Thumb Geyser Basin with one of the owners of Prismatic Tours, Jason. When I arrived at the meeting spot, there were lots of other tours preparing to take out large groups and I was so thankful that I had booked a private tour! It was a tour at my pace that fit my schedule, I did not have to wait for other parties to arrive. We set out onto the water quickly and had the lake to ourselves! It is obvious that Jason is passionate about his business, he was knowledgeable about the area and shared his experiences of being in Yellowstone over the past 6 years. Because my tour was private, I was able to ask questions, get tips on how best to kayak, and tune in easily to information that Jason was sharing. I had toured the West Thumb Geyser Basin by land the previous day and it was incredible to see things from the perspective of my kayak. Jason was sure to point out unique features and areas of interest along the way. This was an amazing experience that I highly recommend for those looking for an adventure on Yellowstone Lake. I recommend inquiring about a land tour/kayak tour of the Geyser Basin so you can experience it from both perspectives!
Maddi was our tour guide and she was so great! She shared lots of interesting facts and stories about Yellowstone, the current state of the park and history surrounding the area. Not to mention the kayaking was beautiful! I've hiked around West Thumb (still great), but it was amazing to see from the water. How many chances will you have to be on Yellowstone Lake? Maddi also took pictures for us.
